We recently sat down with Cathy Dierckxsens, a cosmetic dermatologist and the owner of Amelio Clinic in Belgium.
In our conversation with Cathy, we touched on her aesthetics journey to date, what drives her, and what Cynosure Lutronic devices she uses in her day-to-day at Amelio Clinic.
She also gives us a sneak peek into her talk on skin rejuvenation at the Cynosure Lutronic European Laser Symposium, so stick around for that!
What’s your background?
“I studied medicine at the Free University of Brussels and specialised in dermatology. That’s where my passion for skin and aesthetic skin treatments arose. As I became increasingly interested in aesthetic treatments, I wanted to learn more and obtained an additional degree in Aesthetic & Laser Dermatology Procedures from the University of Versailles in France.”
Cathy is clearly passionate about her work, going as far as getting a second degree!
“I started a private dermatology practice in Brussels over 20 years ago and recently I founded Amelio Clinic, a dermatology, aesthetics and laser clinic. I am passionate about my job as cosmetic dermatologist, and love to combine skin care, injections and different laser treatments to optimise treatment outcomes.”
She loves to read, travel, kitesurf and dive – a busy life; it’s a wonder she can make time for her friends, family and, let’s not forget, her two cats!
What Cynosure Lutronic devices do you use?
The Amelio Clinic has a wide variety of Cynosure Lutronic devices, including:
DermaV
The DermaV is the future of vascular and pigment treatments.
Dr Dierckxsens describes the DermaV as a “great, innovative and versatile vascular laser, covering all vascular indications, including more difficult ones, such as PWS, but also pigment treatment and skin rejuvenation. It has innovative features, such as the variable pulse modes, cryogen cooling, and the fact that it can be used as a PDL; all this without the inconveniences of a dye laser.”
The DermaV is a long-pulsed 532n KTP & 1,064nm Nd:YAG Laser which uses the latest technology, such as cryogen cooling, variable sequential pulsing technology, and real-time temperature sensing.
“What I like about DermaV is how easy and fast vascular treatments are done due to the large spot sizes used, its safety because of the adaptable cryogen cooling and its effectiveness, giving a high degree of doctor and patient satisfaction.”
Genius MRF
Next up, the Genius MRF, a skin tightening device that helps with the regeneration of collagen and elastin.
“It’s a great skin tightening device to use on face and body indications.
I like the genius as it is the only microneedling RF device that has impedance control during the entire pulse and gives feedback on pulse quality, allowing the generation of consistent coagulation volumes and guaranteeing efficacy.”
The Genius MRF works by allowing the volume of dermal coagulation to be controlled, all while protecting the epidermis and the epidermal junction from thermal damage. This helps the skin regain its volume and tone.
LaseMD Ultra
An intelligent non-ablative fractional laser, the LaseMD Ultra is “a gentle resurfacing laser, ideal for pigment treatment and cosmeceutical delivery.”
Dr Dierckxsens adds, “I like its versatility; we use it with mild parameters and active ingredients (‘babyface laser’) for preventive anti-ageing and skin glow, and with stronger parameters for resurfacing, pigment and sun damage treatment. Also love the ideal combination with the Genius MRF.”
The LaseMD Ultra is perfect for use on all skin types due to its gentle laser, with full treatment only taking 6-8 minutes.
eCO2
A “great and very solid CO2 laser”, Dr Dierckxsens says that she uses the eCO2 with fractional and surgical handpieces.”
“I like the fractional mode with 3 different tips and spot sizes, and I really like the dynamic mode allowing to feather around the stamping mode, reducing the risks of demarcations, or to use the ‘Eco -toning mode’ for a more gentle ablative resurfacing.”
The eCO2 is an ablative fractional laser that offers resurfacing treatment. Easy to use, it offers improved comfort and unmatched results to your patients.
Clarity II
Heralded as the “world’s fastest wavelength laser”, Dr Dierckxsens remarks that the Clarity II “is the best laser for hair removal”.
She doesn’t stop there, she adds that the Clarity II, “allows me to treat all skin types, using effective fluences in large spot sizes and the intelligent tracking system for faster treatments of large areas. It also has a 1ms pulse for treatment of very thin facial hairs.”
But that’s not the only thing that the Clarity II can do: “Next to hair removal, it can treat vascular- and pigment indication and can be used for skin rejuvenation.”
There’s not much that the Clarity II can’t do!
SPECTRA XT
“The SPECTRA XT is a very good Q-switched laser with 3 different handpieces,” Dr Dierckxsens reminisces, “it was one of my first Lutronic devices, and I still use it a lot for pigment treatment, laser toning, Hollywood carbon peels and occasionally for tattoo removal.”
For years, the SPECTRA XT has remained at the forefront of laser treatment, featuring a variety of effective treatment options, adjustable parameters for minimised downtime and four different adjustable wavelengths (1064 nm, 532 nm, 585 nm, 650 nm).
HEALITE II
Dr Dierckxsens describes the HEALITE II as a “must have device”.
“We use the HEALITE every day as a minimally invasive treatment that promotes wound healing and reduces healing time. It works great and patients love it!”
Low-level light phototherapy is the process of using incident light to photomodulate cellular function, improving healing times, relieving pain, subsiding active acne and much more. It’s no wonder that Dr Dierckxsens uses it daily!
What will you be discussing at the European Laser Symposium?
“I will talk about combining techniques to improve outcomes in skin rejuvenation, like the combination of Genius and Ultra, and how I combine the Genius MRF treatments with Radiesse injections for additional bio stimulation.”
Dr Dierckxsens is leading the way in cutting-edge aesthetics treatments; it’s amazing to learn how she uses her Cynosure Lutronic devices, helping to improve the lives, health and confidence of her patients on a daily basis.
We want to extend a huge thank you to Dr Cathy Dierckxsens for taking the time to answer our questions. It was a pleasure talking to her and learning about the amazing work that goes on at the Amelio Clinic.
